An important parameter in the design of piston compressors is the flow losses occurring during suction and discharge processes. At Danfoss we have used CFD as a tool to visualise the flow patterns and evaluate losses for several years. Here we present the basic principles of the compressor and possible methods for evaluation of losses.

The introduction to the presentation constitutes review of the chosen multiphase flow experiments. The wave features of the two-phase flow are illustrated by propagation of the signals in the shock tube. The amplification as well as damping of the waves is shown for various boundary conditions in the liquid-steam medium. The numerical simulation of the water-steam mixture in the channel by means of the Homogenous Equilibrium Model exemplifies thermodynamic equilibrium approach. The non-equilibrium models are presented for various multiphase problems. The basis of the extended irreversible thermodynamics in the application to the two-phase flows is presented.

As well as being a key product in the Danfoss product line, the expansion valve is a fundamental device in virtually any cooling cycle. Since it plays an important role in controlling the cooling capacity, it is necessary to have a basic understanding of the behaviour of the flow inside the device. This presentation will cover an introduction to multiphase flows and give a description of the challenges involved in the design of expansion valves. Additionally, results from laboratory experiments and CFD will be presented.
